Times change quickly. The internet is overtaking TV as the dominant communications platform, while mobile usage continues to gain traction in both the US and across the globe.

To assist you in understanding how US federal laws are adapting to catch up with the way we communicate, we’ve pulled together some information for you. As parents and providers of content for children, Curious Hat wants you to enjoy your mobile devices while protecting the privacy of your children. We hope this helps.

What is the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule?

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is a US Federal law that first went into effect in April 2000 with the goal of protecting children’s online privacy. An updated rule was written into law on July 1, 2013 and addresses the evolution of consumer communications.

The new rule protects children from online privacy issues stemming from geo-location data which can be used for a variety of mobile marketing purposes, use of children’s images online and “persistent data” that can be used to track device location.

Specific details can be found here.

How does the COPPA rule impact parents and their children?

COPPA puts parents in control over what online information content providers and advertisers can collect from children under 13. The COPPA Rule applies to digital content owners such as online entertainment websites and mobile gaming apps that interact with children. It provides guidelines protecting personal information such as social security information, online names, photos and videos.

In addition to guarding children’s privacy, COPPA empowers parents to review their children’s personal information and manage it as they see fit. Curious Hat suggests that parents also test their children’s apps, read privacy policies and talk with kids about their online activities.

What is Curious Hat doing to support these regulations?

Curious Hat has built a portfolio of children’s apps that sparks creative learning through engaging experiences.

Moving forward, we’ll continue to adhere to regulations providing your children with a safe environment to learn. Independent organizations such as Moms With Apps have taken the initiative to compile lists of organizations that comply with COPPA. Curious Hat is an Moms With Apps member and works with organizations that champion children’s privacy.

Rest assured that we’ll do our part to provide your children with engaging experiences that offer a springboard for growth in a safe environment.
